Cherished time together

Being at home with our children is so rewarding.  This summer Jake is not in school or any type of program and I really wanted to be purposeful with our time together before he starts kindergarten.  A few days ago, at bed time, he asked me if he could “study with me”.  I said “study?”, he said, “yes, in your Bible, and can we write in it?” Yes we can study and we will see about the writing part.  The next day we made him a journal out of some big chief paper and made a cover out of a previous art project.  He has yet to write in it, but none the less, he has a journal like mom.  The first day I opened to Psalm 34, the Psalm for the day, and began to read.  I came to verse 14 “Turn away from evil and do what is good…”  we camped there.  He understood what evil was and he even gave an example of a boy in preschool not minding the teacher, Jake said ”and he did it all the time” so we talked about turning away from that and he said “and so you turn around and go the other way?”  Yes, and do good and he gave an example of obedience.  What an awesome time in the word with my son!!!

The following day he asked if we could “study together” again.  Of course, right after breakfast we will.   I had just read in my devo about making the most of every opportunity and was ready to do so with my son!  I had not really planned ahead though so wasn’t sure what we would read.  As I finished my devo the last part was “Now it’s your turn”.  It simply said read Luke 19:1-10 and ask these questions.  So I finished my cereal and headed in to his room. I didn’t even look the passage up, I just went in to his room and wrote the questions on his chalk board

1.What was Jesus doing?

2. Where was he going?

3. Who did he notice?

4. What was the outcome?

He said, “I don’t know the answers to those questions”.  I told him we needed to read the story first to find out.  I opened and it was the story of Zacchaeus, Jake knew the story and gladly help tell the story as I read in my Bible.   I asked the questions as we read and he answered, then he looked at the board and with surprise said, “I answered some of those questions!”  Way too cool to see the Word of God exciting my son!

The third day he had come down with pink eye and we had not been to the doc yet, our apt. was later in the day.  So, I flipped open to Mark and was looking for a parable or a short story he could grasp.  In Mark8:22-26 was a short but complete teaching so we read “Healing a Blind Man”.  I really didn’t make the connection until after, when we were processing the verses, that just as Jesus had spit in the man’s eye and laid hands on him to be healed, Jake needed his eyes to be healed and he said “he can heal my eyes, maybe in like 7 days in stead of in the wink of an eye”.  He was trusting that God would heal his eyes.

I have been blown away this week to see how God has orchestrated our “study time together” to teach him and me about His faithfulness, His provision and His love for His children.  He has met us in our study time, as we have been faithful to do it.  God is doing this not me!!!  I am so thankful for a loving God who wants to see my son know Him personally!  Praise God for how He teaches even the little ones.
